August 27, 2020 email from Environmental & Civil Rights Attorney Bryan Pease: Puppy scams, police reform, and more!
Friend -- After obtaining injunctions and shutting down all 10 remaining puppy stores across three counties in California that were selling puppy mill puppies falsely labeled "rescues" to evade a new state law, I am now going after other animal abusing scammers. This week I filed a lawsuit against Puppy Heaven, a puppy store which moved to Las Vegas after the new CA law took effect, but illegally delivers puppies to a parking lot in Los Angeles for California customers. In addition to falsely claiming the puppies are healthy and from "reputable breeders," Puppy Heaven also displays random celebrities on its website in a scrolling image, falsely claiming association with them, such as this example showing actor Will Smith: Read the full lawsuit here: Instead of arresting and prosecuting animal abusers, police and prosecutors often take a pro-business approach and target activists calling attention to the problem instead. For instance, in a case I have pending against the Riverside Sheriff's Department for threatening peaceful protesters with arrest for picketing a (since shut down) illegal puppy store in a mall, Riverside County is claiming California civil rights statutes do not apply. While I am confident the court will rule in our favor in this case, there are many cases in which exceptions and immunities for police misconduct have been inserted into California's civil rights laws by courts that the legislature never intended. SB731 would solve this problem and has already passed the state senate, two assembly committees, and now heads to the assembly floor for a vote! The National Police Accountability Project has more info, including how to contact your assemblymember if you are in California: https://www.nlg-npap.org/ca- -- Bryan
