World of Wonders Rupaul Party

The World of Wonder gallery is on Hollywood Boulevard and Cherokee.
WOW is currently exhibiting Rupaul’s Drag Race which had a fantastic opening with a wide array of gorgeous drag queens and techno campy revelry reminiscent of the nineties.
Next month will feature
Adult industries themes.
“Oh my Goth!” in march, in time for pisces.
Late 2008 shows included
“99 cent Christmas”
a parody of capitalism, consumer culture, poverty, commodification of spirituality.
Canned food drive as charity/art installation too!!!
Owls were the focus of the prior show.
I first noticed WOW gallery with a candy sculpture art of an absurdist, glam, Candyland bent.
the window displayed mannequins with 100s of glued on life savers.
I wondered what was going on?
Did I like it?
Did I hate it? Is it art?
Dwelling on a high art low art binary reductionism would definitely slide world of wonders into the realm of lowbrow.
They celebrate this on their storefront sign, “Where highbrow and lowbrow collide!”
As a local Hollywood resident and pedestrian, I have come to expect all manner of sleaze from my Hollywood shops. In anticipation of the rapid development getting thrown up at Hollywood and Vine, I expect the streets to soon be layered in gold leaf. We must enjoy the gritty smut while we can, before everything gets turned into a big corporate supermall.
Los Angeles on the whole struggles to keep up with artier cities.
If World of Wonders does damage to the concept of art, as it would most assuredly not be accepted by the confirmed art snobs, World of Wonders keeps something very vital pumping through the neighborhood.
Edgy, outsider, trashy, however you want to call it, the art contained therein is often actually phenomenal.
The pop culture format preys upon our baser instincts, and parodies the emptiness therein.
With the Geffen Contemporary’s indefinite closure and budget crisis, we must look elsewhere to our small independent uninhibited local art galleries to pick up the slack.
I’m thrilled I stumbled in on the Rupaul party January 15th 2009.
I bumped into one of my favorite DJ’s Bip Jeffington and his glamorous friend Andi.
The drag queen eye candy left me breathless and aspirational!!!!
Maybe we could amp up the camp in Hollywood!!!! glad someone wants to wear the heels!
I commend World of Wonders for going where angels fear to tread because as an artist, it inspires me to see vital, uninhibited expression, unchecked by the self-consciousness of the legitimate un-outsider art community.
The decadence and outrageousness thus embodied is the life blood of creation and inspiration, and it is no secret that the lowbrow and highbrow have been in bed together a long time, feeding off eachother’s depravity and pomposity.
