was drifting down a hot sunset thinking of a samuel beckett print that was in this gallery space last march at space 15twenty or 1520 or fifteen20 . . . needing refuge from dollars and cents . . . the bank . . . the nagging typos, the weakness in my shoulders, the blanchot begging me back, and ghosts reappearance . . . and superficially anything that recalls sofia coppola (i.e. spike jonze) to mind makes me so happy, though on what terms any of it, i don't know . . . excepts so clearly monsters populated my waking days, i'm so glad someone else has this real visualized problem and compulsive doodling, like the sketchbook of yesterday and its silent unbirth and obscurity, like kippenberger, not quite so pretty, but smart . . . and the goat monster inhabited by the artist sonny gerasimowicz who helps run this funky space, rife with devendra's coffetable book family burn-off, now more retro than before, and the ticket sending me into the urban outfitters with themed merchandise and forest village, and promo press less-naked than american apparel, and fun things like stickers, polaroids, and smiling moustached boys and the 1520 now wants a quarter to go to the bathroom, meaning this is now europe? well . . . it seems monsters will be in . . . and it was a welcome fantasy stroll through the future, neon hats, frosted jeans, monsters, daytime hip kids . . . the new "where the wild things are" spike jonze film will come out soon with sonny's artistic input . . . and prints at $700 or so? taking?
826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.
Drop-In Tutoring
We still need tutors — please come in and sign up for a weekly slot. Drop-in tutoring is free one-on-one attention for students, ages 8-18, working on their homework or their first novel. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. 826LA is proud to provide this service to the students in our area, and we look forward to seeing you!
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please email iwanttohelp@826la.org.
