Joe Walsh reports on City Council Split Vote on JTTF Police Report

We were pleasantly surprised during the council hearing concerning the report of chief of police to the Portland City Council not because they ruled in our favor, but because we received two of the five votes to kick the report back to have it resubmitted sometime in the future.  For many of us having two of the five members question the report was stunning.  If Mayor Hales would have sided with Commissioners Fritz and Novick we would have a council that finally listens to the people they represent.  One needs to remember that the council passed this agreement with the FBI to rejoin the JTTF unanimously,  over many of our objections.  To have two members agree that they are not getting what they bargained for is truly remarkable.  I smiled after coming out of the morning session.  My hope is that we will put Commissioner Fish on notice that if he keeps voting in opposition to our wishes he may find himself out of a job.  If would be good for a well known person in the minority community to challenge Fish for reelection.  That would be good.  We are very close to being represented and should move for the third vote.  Novick has been a great surprise to me, Amanda has always been our favorite person on the council.

Thoreau may have also brooded over the reaction of Emerson, who criticized the imprisonment as pointless. According to some accounts, Emerson visited Thoreau in jail and asked, “Henry, what are you doing in there?” Thoreau replied, “Waldo, the question is what are you doing out there?”
