Thara John Memory, the mentor of jazz artist Esperanza Spalding who won a Grammy with her in 2013, faces allegations of sexually abusing two girls and two women in Portland.
The famed jazz trumpeter and instructor was arraigned Monday on accusations of third-degree sexual abuse, attempted third-degree sexual abuse and harassment. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and then released.
Memory, 68, was indicted Friday.
He is accused of inappropriately touching the breasts, mouths and cheeks of the alleged victims between July 2013 and March 2016, the indictment said. Two were under age 18 during the alleged abuse.
An investigation began last September after a student filed a complaint, police said.
Memory directs the American Music Program, a nonprofit where students in seventh- to 12th-grade learn jazz. The American Music Program's bands have won national honors including the 2015 Essentially Ellington event in New York, the country's top high school jazz competition.
He also leads an after school jazz music program at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Northeast Portland and gives private one-on-one lessons, said his attorney Lisa Ludwig.
Two of the alleged victims were Memory's students who have since stopped taking lessons, his lawyer said. It's not yet clear if the other two also were his students.
While out of custody, the instructor will not be allowed to have any contact with children, Ludwig said.
"We believe there's a lot more to this story and we're eager for it to come out," she said.
According to Memory's biography, he has taught courses at Portland State University, Portland Community College and Marylhurst University and has worked with high school band programs at Wilson High School in Portland and the Arts and Communications Magnet Academy in Beaverton.
Memory is an Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductee. In 2013, Memory and Spalding won a Grammy together for their collaboration on Spalding's song, "City of Roses."
