Scientific Intelligence Chief
Ransom Ludwig Eng, 91, who retired in 1969 as chief of scientific intelligence at the Central Intelligence Agency, died of pneumonia Aug. 19 at Inova Alexandria Hospital. He had broken his hip earlier in the month.
Mr. Eng, who lived at Goodwin House West in Falls Church, was a native of Fulda, Minn. He was a graduate of the University of South Dakota and received a master's degree in education and psychology from the University of Southern California.
During World War II, he served in the Navy as an intelligence officer in the Philippines and Okinawa.
After the war, he served with the Office of Naval Intelligence and the Central Intelligence Group in Washington. The CIA later posted him to England.
He renovated houses in Capitol Hill after he retired and studied art at the Corcoran School. He exhibited his paintings in Falls Church.
Mr. Eng was treasurer of the Metropolitan Organ Society and a member of the residents council at Goodwin House West.
His wife of 65 years, Helen Stephens Eng, died Dec. 31.
Survivors include a son, Stephen Richard Eng of Nashville, and four grandchildren.
